The Fokker E.III was the first aircraft to carry a synchronized machine gun. Because the gun was mounted directly in front of the pilot and could shoot through the propeller, the E.III was able to shoot more accurately than any plane it encountered.
The plane's light weight, powerful engine and accurate gun made the Fokker E.III the dominant fighter of the time and began what has come to be known as the "Fokker Scourge".
