The design of the Nieuport 11 was based on the pre-war Nieuport 10 racing plane. It was a smaller, single seat version of the plane, usually called a "baby Nieuport"
The 11 was light, fast and maneuverable, but the "wing and a half" construction allowed the wings to twist in a steep dive. Nevertheless, the Nieuport 11 was able to counter the German Fokker E.III which had dominated the skies until then.
This plane carries the personal markings of Lt. Armand de Turenne who flew with French Escadrille N48.
