A vacant lot in the marketplace becomes a place where people can sell items they don't have a need for. This is the medieval equilvalent to a garage sale or flea market, except that you might also find garden produce, eggs, or even small animals for sale in addition to household items, handcrafts and tools. The bazaar is a useful way for peasants to get a few coins so they can buy luxury items they can't get through barter.
