Bread was served at nearly every meal in medieval times,
so the baker was a busy man. Wheat, oats, rye, barley, and
mixtures of them were commonly used to make bread. Different
kinds of bread were made for different purposes. Crackers,
pretzels, biscuits, and cakes were baked in addition to
loaves of bread.
Bread was baked in brick ovens with a separate chamber
for the fire. A door on the oven chamber helped keep the
heat even on the inside. A long wooden paddle was used to
take the bread out of the hot oven.
Every castle needs an oven and a baker to make bread for
all the people who live there.
