Battering rams would be used during a seige to break down walls or break open the doors of enemy castles. The ram is a large log hanging in a sturdy frame that could be swung back and forth to pound against a vertical surface. Often, the ram had a metal cap to increase its destructive power. This battering ram has a roof over the frame to help protect the soldiers operating the ram from the rocks and arrows which would be flung down by the defenders. The wheels would allow the ram to be pushed up to the castle walls and pulled back for repairs when necessary. |
